SWOT online app integrates sea turtle telemetry data

We are happy to announce that we have made a great improvement for the SWOT online app. Now the SWOT app integrates sea turtle telemetry data so you can see sea turtle nesting locations and movements of animals simultaneously. Some 40 telemetry datasets in the OBIS-SEAMAP database are automatically loaded in the SWOT app and listed in the Dataset selection panel. You can turn on/off individual datasets.

Most of the sea turtle telemetry datasets in the OBIS-SEAMAP database are transferred from the Satellite Tracking and Analysis Tool (STAT) program, among which the SWOT app displays those that the data owners explicitly agreed to share with SWOT. There are also several sea turtle telemetry datasets directly submitted to OBIS-SEAMAP. Upon providers' agreement to make them available to the SWOT, such datasets are also included in the SWOT app. There are other sea turtle telemetry datasets with no explicit providers' agreement to share with SWOT. You can search these datasets and add them to the SWOT app.

You can request nesting and telemetry data for your research by submitting a data request form. Use of telemetry data for your research requires providers' permission as in the case of nesting counts according to the SWOT Terms of Use. The telemetry datasets with no explicit providers' agreement to share with SWOT are not subject to the SWOT data request processes. You have to follow the OBIS-SEAMAP's data download processes, instead.

We hope the integration of nesting and telemetry data facilitates ecological assessments of sea turtles.
