This year Society for Protection of Turtles are tracking green turtles nesting in the Karpaz region. It is the first time that green turtles in this important area have been tracked by satellite. We aim to map priority marine habitats around these nesting beaches, which are among the most important in the Mediterranean, to establishing protection for nesting green turtles at sea.

We are also tracking loggerhead turtles nesting at Alagadi to find areas of the Mediterranean Sea that might be important feeding grounds.

In collaboration with small-scale fisheries, we are tracking both green and loggerhead turtles foraging in Famagusta Bay. We want to better understand fisheries bycatch, toward reducing the death toll in this region. For this project we ask fishermen to return to port those live turtles that are hauled in their nets so that we can attach a transmitter and release them back to the capture site. This project is particularly exciting as it includes the first juvenile green and loggerhead turtles and the first male loggerheads to be tracked from the island.

The project is supported by the Mediterranean Basin Program of the MAVA foundation and is a collaboration between University of Exeter and Birdlife International with Enalia Physis, Birdlife Cyprus and Society for Protection of Turtles implementing work on the ground.

Visit STAT's project page for additional information at http://www.seaturtle.org/tracking/index.shtml?project_id=12982018020420211218ground conditionAs neededOcean0.93239.85739.42128.161
