The data in this dataset represent sightings that occurred during nearshore humpback whale monitoring beginning in January 2015 through May 2015 off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA. Work was performed under HDR task order CTO 54 (IDIQ contract award N62470-10-D-3011, NAVFAC LANT).
The dataset added animal sightings and boat tracks during nearshore humpback whale monitoring surveys beginning in October 2017 through March 2018 off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA. Fifteen days of nearshore surveys were completed between 10/31/2017 – 03/10/2018. Additionally, six humpback whales and three fin whales were tagged and tracked by satellite using the Argos system. These tagging data are included as separate point and line feature classes. Work was performed under HDR task order TO17F4013 (IDIQ contract award N62470-15-D-8006, NAVFAC LANT).
The dataset added animal sightings and boat tracks during nearshore humpback whale monitoring surveys beginning in July 2018 through May 2019 off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA. Twenty-eight days of nearshore surveys were completed between 07/31/2018 – 05/20/2019. Additionally, ten humpback whales were tagged and tracked by satellite using the Argos system. These tagging data are included as separate point and line feature classes. Work was performed under HDR task order TO19F4005 (IDIQ contract award N62470-15-D-8006, NAVFAC LANT).
The dataset added animal sightings and boat tracks during nearshore humpback whale monitoring surveys beginning in December 2019 through March 2020 off the coast of Virginia Beach, VA. Fifteen days of nearshore surveys were completed between 12/21/2019 – 03/27/2020. Work was performed under HDR task order TO20F4011 (IDIQ contract award N62470-15-D-8006, NAVFAC LANT).Please contact data provider[2022-08-16] Data in December 2019 - March 2020 were added.
[2020-06-05] Data in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 were added.
[2020-01-28] Data of season 2 (TO13; Dec2015-May2016) and season 3 (TO33; Nov2016-Mar2017) were added.
Sightings and effort data were entered and organized in this geodatabase by HDR. Source data was provided by HDR under the MSM IDIQ contract. Sighting locations represent actual animal locations. Sightings and effort data for this project were collected using a prototype collection application. Because this application used a different database structure, there are no environmentals associated with the effort tracks.
Survey tracklines (aggregated over time) are available online and included in a downloadable zip file (shapefile format).2015010220200327ground conditionNone plannedNorth Atlantic-76.29213-74.93488337.16981936.523232

Open public unless otherwise noted. See Use Constraints for details.
Data use constraints are consistent with those outlined in Appendix B (Data Use Agreement) for NAVFAC contract N62470-10-D-3011.
General use constraints for OBIS-SEAMAP data are
1. Not to use data obtained from OBIS-SEAMAP in any publication, product, or commercial application without proper attribution to the original data provider(s) and OBIS-SEAMAP unless the datasets are explicitly shown under the CC0 policy. Citations or credits are suggested as attribution. If the data you downloaded come from multiple datasets, a citation or credit to each of the datasets is required.

2. To forward the citation of any publication / report that made use of the data / tools provided by OBIS-SEAMAP for inclusion in our list of references.
3. Not to hold OBIS-SEAMAP or the original data providers liable for errors in the data. While we have made every effort to ensure the quality of the database, we cannot guarantee the accuracy of these datasets.
4. The burden for determining fitness for use of the downloaded data for any analyses lies entirely with the user. OBIS-SEAMAP or the original data providers do not support outcomes of your analyses that used the data you downloaded from OBIS-SEAMAP.
5. To consider inclusion of the accompanying transect (effort) dataset if available into the methodology of your analyses.
6. Not to redistribute the data you downloaded from OBIS-SEAMAP through any media without contect from OBIS-SEAMAP and the original data providers unless the datasets are explicitly shown under the CC0 policy.
