Dataset Brief

(Figures as of 08/23/06)

The three figures in the center pane of the Home page represent the growing database of OBIS-SEAMAP.

The first line is the number of datasets available to the public and the total number of observation records.

The second line is the number of distinguished species observed in the datasets. This is counted at species level of taxonomy. Note that datasets may contain observations at higher taxonomic levels (e.g. genus, family) , which are not counted here.

The third line is the number of species whose detailed profiles are available through OBIS-SEAMAP. This is fewer than the number of species observed (second line) because they do not necessarily have detailed profiles. Detailed profiles can include physical description, distribution, ecology and behavior, feeding and prey, threats and status, and references.
