How to search dataset or species
Quick Link
If you know the species name or a part of the dataset name, Quick Link is the most convenient search functionality to get to the species or dataset page. Just enter the name into the textbox labeled 'Quick Link'. This box is equipped with a live search feature that brings up a list of candidates that match the name you are entering. Then, select the one from the list you are looking for.
As this box accepts either species name or dataset name, the resulting candidate list is grouped by dataset and species (the species list appears first).
If you already know the numeric Dataset ID or ITIS species taxonomic serial number, you can simply enter the number into the textbox. The number with three digits or less is considered as a Dataset ID. That with more than three digits is treated as a species ITIS taxonomic serial number (e.g. 180426 for bottlenose dolphins).
Full Text Search
If you are looking for species or dataset that are characterized by any keywords, use Full Text Search. This search feature looks for the words entered in the textbox against the following elements:
Dataset: abstract, purpose, supplimental information, dataset credits, references
Species: Physical Description, Distribution,
Ecology and Behavior,
Feeding and Prey,
Threats and Status
The words are not treated as a literal phrase. They are treated as a word individually and all words should be found in the above element.
As this search is targeted at either species or dataset, the resulting candidate list is grouped by dataset and species (the dataset list appears first). A click on the dataset or species takes you to the corresponding page.
