Features & Functions

Face Feature Description
(Default) Identify This function is available when no tool button is selected. If another button is selected, deselecting it enables "Identify."

Click on the cell you want to get the information for. The popup window will come out, showing #observations in the cell.
Be patient as it may take the results several seconds to show.
Species box 
Species of interest
Specify the name of you species of interest.
  1. Enter a part of scientific/common name of your species into the text box. A list of candidate species shows up.
  2. If you find your species in the list, click the species or use the arrow keys to select it.
  3. (option) You can also keep typing to enter the name in full. Once done, click ([Update] button) to refresh the map.
The map shows the observations of that species.
zoom in Zoom in
To zoom in, you need to define a rectangle on the map where you want to zoom in. First click on the map to locate one of the two diagonal vertices of the rectangle. Release the mouse button and move the mouse to the other diagonal point. The red guiding line appears. Then click again to fix the rectangle.
 Draw ROI Draw region of interest
A region of interest (ROI) takes a rectangular shape. First click on the map to locate one of the two diagonal vertices of the rectangle. Release the mouse button and move the mouse to the other diagonal point. The red guiding line appears. Then click again to fix the rectangle.
The map is updated automatically, extracting observations in the ROI drawn.
 Erase ROI Remove ROI
To remove the region of interest (ROI), click the button and click on the ROI you want to remove.
The map is updated automatically.

Observations by taxa
Click one of the buttons to filter the observations on the map to that taxa group.
OBIS-SEAMAP groups species into three taxa groups. [All] includes all the three groups.
The numbers to the right of the buttons are the numbers of observations (not animals). All observations from ship/aerial surveys and data from tagged animals are counted.

Grid size indicator
The current grid size in degree. There are three resolutions for the grid-based distribution map: 1/0.1/0.01 degree. The grid size automatically changes according to the current zoom level.

Zoom level: 0 - 4: 1 degree
Zoom level: 5 - 8: 0.1 degree
Zoom level: 9 -   : 0.01 degree

Grid color legend
Grids are color-coded by the number of observations in cells. the color schema changes according to the grid size (zoom level). It also changes when a species is chosen.
