Mare Nostrum is a non-governmental organization, acting in the environmental area from 1993, with professional researchers working in the north-western Black Sea. Developed projects on cetaceans since 2001. Campaigns at sea are dedicated to data collection (marine animals, maritime traffic, marine debris) and the research methods used are mainly line transect and photo-identification.

The present database was established as an instrument for the Black Sea Photo-Identification research, and tries to include the studies from the entire basin. For the moment it includes 3 areas (Romania - Mare Nostrum NGO, Bulgaria - Green Balkans NGO and Ukraine - ACCOBAMS training, lead by Dr. Alexei Birkun) but the objective is to reach all 6 riparian countries.
<purpose>Mare Nostrum NGO contributes to the growing knowledge on cetacean aiming for their protection. We work on subjects like ecology, distribution, and monitoring the impact of human activities (bycatch, ship strike, disturbance by leisure vessels).

We are working with several marine protected area managers at a local, national or international level (i.e., Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve, Romanian Ministry of the Environment, National Institute of Marine Research and Development "Grigore Antipa", National Agency of Aquaculture and Fisheries, ACCOBAMS etc.).

Mare Nostrum NGO is also ACCOBAMS Partner since 2013.</purpose><supplinf>[2015-02-10] The 2014 data and images were added.

Also you can consult the database of standings, bycatches and sightings from 2010 to 2013 which have been included in OBIS-SEAMAP.
The Photo-ID activity is on going for 2014.
