According to Brunner (2004), while the locality for Blainville's specimens is given as Tinian (Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific), the consensus is that this was a mistake; Blainville visited the Falkland Islands on the same trip. The specimen, according to Brunner, is without doubt a southern sea lion (based on palate descriptions), while the identity of Shaw's specimen (undescribed skull) remains uncertain (and it could have been a light-coloured Arctophoca, i.e. A. gazella). Thus, the earliest available name applicable with certainty in terms of identification is O. byronia'</ax21:commentDetail><ax21:commentId>70118</ax21:commentId><ax21:commentTimeStamp>2020-08-28 20:58:35.0</ax21:commentTimeStamp><ax21:commentator>S.N.
