This dataset contains observation records of marine birds as published online in the Notornis journal. Notornis is the Ornithological Society of New Zealand's quarterly scientific journal. This peer-reviewed journal has been publishing ornithological research relevant to New Zealand and the South Pacific since 1943 (originally as New Zealand Bird Notes).
Records are mainly of unusual bird reports received to the OSNZ Records Appraisal Committee (RAC) and reports of bird surveys around islands offshore of New Zealand and in the southwest Pacific Ocean.

This dataset was downloaded from OBIS (https://obis.org/). The records for only marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles and rays and sharks were extracted. Records with no longitude/latitude or no date (eventDate) were excluded.
