Abstract

The Molluscs of Tasmania http://www.molluscsoftasmania.org.au/) contains information on all the marine mollusc species that are currently recognised as occurring in Tasmanian waters by the author of these pages, Simon Grove. This project grew out of the 2006 publication of A systematic list of the marine molluscs of Tasmania, by Simon Grove, Ron Kershaw, Brian Smith and Elizabeth Turner. Because molluscan taxonomy is in a continual state of flux, and because our understanding of what species occur in Tasmania is advancing all the time, a paper publication on this subject rapidly becomes outdated as new species are discovered, new names and taxonomic relationships are introduced and old ones invalidated.
Nearly all records from this provider are from beached material ('death assemblages'), and do not necessarily indicate the presence of live animals at the recorded locality. Images and other distribution records are available at the Molluscs of Tasmania website.
This data set of 20,000 records sourced from Simon Groves, September 2017. Taxa (463 species out of 473) have been matched to the World Register of Marine Species.

Supplemental information

This dataset was downloaded from OBIS (https://obis.org/). The records for only marine mammals, seabirds, sea turtles and rays and sharks were extracted. Records with no longitude/latitude or no date (eventDate) were excluded.

Attributes

Overview

This section explains attributes included in the original dataset. OBIS-SEAMAP restricts the attributes available to the public to date/time, lat/lon and species names/counts only. Should you need other attributes described here, you are encouraged to contact the data provider.

Attributes described below represent those in the original dataset provided by the provider.
All attributes are included in the downloadable file (CSV or ESRI File Geodatabase) for "Complete Set of Dataset".
