Abstract
This dataset contains data from the geographic information system (GIS) shapefile of recovered Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) carcass locations within Florida from April 1974 through to the latest spatially verified data presently available. Locations are based both on coordinates provided by field staff (gathered either by geographic positioning system [GPS] or by using navigation charts to ascertain latitudes and longitudes) and maps provided by the field staff. Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) GIS staff in the Marine Mammal subsection verify that the provided coordinates match the intent of the plotted location. Points representing carcass locations were entered into a GIS using a digital shoreline basemap taken largely from NOAA navigation charts (1:40,000) and from USGS quadrangles (1:24,000). The scale is considered to be 1:40,000.
|
Purpose
The primary use of this dataset is to display reported manatee carcass recovery locations and associated attributes, such as cause of death.

Attributes
Overview
This section explains attributes included in the original dataset.
OBIS-SEAMAP restricts the attributes available to the public to date/time, lat/long and species names/counts only.
Should you need other attributes described here, you are encouraged to contact the data provider.
Attributes described below represent those in the original dataset provided by the provider.
Only minimum required attributes are visible and downloadable online. Other attributes may be obtained upon provider's permission.
Attributes in dataset
Attribute (table column) | Description |
oid | Unique ID number (generated by OBIS-SEAMAP) |
objectid | Object ID |
fieldid | Unique Field ID assigned to each manatee carcass recovered. This ID is used to identify the region of Florida, year and chronological order within that year for the region of Florida where the carcass was recovered. Exceptions include animals that were rescued, then died while in the care of an oceanaria facility, which include Sea World (SWFTm), Lowry Park Zoo (LPZ) and Miami Seaquarium (MSQ). |
repdate | Report date |
repyear | Report year |
repmonth | Report month |
repday | Report day |
sex | Sex of recovered manatee carcass (M: male, F: female, U: unknown) |
tlength | Total length of the manatee carcass, measured from snout to fluke edge in centimeters. |
state | State |
county | County within Florida that the manatee carcass was recovered in. |
latitude | Latitude of manatee carcass recovery location. Decimal degree, in NAD27 |
longitude | Longitude of manatee carcass recovery location. Decimal degree, in NAD27 |
